Courses: Selkirk offers Explorations Art 8, Explorations Art 9, Art Studio 10, Art Studio 11, Art Studio 12, Studio Arts 2D and 3D. These courses offer opportunities for students to create using many different media. The Visual Arts curriculum provides students with a strong foundation in both three-dimensional and two-dimensional art production. Their course of study will prepare them to enter institutions of higher education as well as the commercial field in visual arts. Students will also attain the skills, knowledge and appreciation of art to continue to use it throughout their lives as a creative outlet.
Instruction includes studies in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, composition, aesthetics, and criticism. Students will deepen their knowledge and skills through in depth studio experiences in the Art Studio 12 course. Beyond that, students in Studio Arts 2D and 3D, can complete a portfolio and visual journal representing the skills and creativity developed in the Visual Arts program. Students will then have the foundations to continue on with post-secondary study if they choose.
Selkirk also offers Media Arts 10-12, which is a computer based art course. See my other microsite page for further info on the Media Arts program.

Upon graduation from Art Studio 12, students will:

  • Demonstrate high levels of art proficiency using a number of media.
  • Have awareness of career opportunities in the arts.
  • Be able to enter a college or university Visual Arts program.
  • Have the opportunity to participate locally in competitions and exhibitions related to art.
  • Speak from a personal, cultural and historical perspective when critiquing art.
  • Confidently refer to themselves as artists and creative people.
  • Have been given the opportunity to create a portfolio of work to present to universities, and colleges for entry into a Visual Arts program.
